Organic material certifications
These standards focus on how materials like cotton, wool, and latex are grown and processed, and whether the finished mattress is truly organic versus just containing some organic components.
Trusted Certifications
Global Organic Textile Standard
- Requires that at least 95% of the natural fiber content (e.g., cotton, wool) is certified organic in a finished product.
- Covers the whole supply chain from farm to finished mattress: it restricts toxic dyes and finishes, prohibits polyurethane foam and many chemical flame retardants, and requires traceability and independent audits.
- For shoppers: “GOTS” is the gold standard if they want a truly organic fabric and batting, not just a bit of organic cotton mixed in.
Global Organic Latex Standard
- Applies specifically to latex and requires at least 95% certified organic raw latex, with strict rules on chemicals used during processing.
- Includes environmental and social responsibility criteria for rubber plantations and factories.
- For shoppers: “GOLS” means the latex core is genuinely organic and responsibly produced, not just “natural” or “plant‑based” marketing language.
Forest Stewardship Council
- When foundations, slats, or inner supports use wood, FSC® certification confirms the wood is sourced from forests managed with sustainable practices and respect for local communities.
- For shoppers: this matters to customers who care about deforestation and ethical sourcing beyond the foam itself.
VOC and off‑gassing certifications
These certifications focus on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemical emissions that contribute to “new mattress smell” and can affect indoor air quality.
GREENGUARD / GREENGUARD Gold
- Tests finished mattresses for VOC emissions in conditions that simulate real bedrooms.
- GREENGUARD Gold is the stricter level, intended for sensitive environments like bedrooms, schools, and healthcare facilities, with tighter VOC limits.
- For shoppers: a GREENGUARD Gold logo means the mattress has very low chemical off‑gassing and is a strong choice for kids, allergy‑sensitive, or chemically sensitive customers.
CertiPUR-US®
- Applies specifically to polyurethane foam used in mattresses and pillows.
- Requires foam to be made without ozone depleters, certain flame retardants (like PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP), heavy metals such as mercury and lead, formaldehyde, and regulated phthalates.
- Limits total VOC emissions from foam to a low threshold (e.g., ≤ 0.5 ppm), which helps reduce off‑gassing odors.
- For shoppers: CertiPUR-US® is a “safer foam” badge; it doesn’t make the mattress organic but does reduce exposure to some of the worst foam chemicals.
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
- Tests textiles and mattress materials for hundreds of harmful substances, including certain heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticide residues, and allergenic dyes.
- Class I is the strictest level, designed for products used by babies and small children.
- For shoppers: OEKO-TEX® is a “skin‑safe and chemical‑screened” label, especially relevant for covers, fabrics, and padding in contact with skin.
eco institut
- Requires products to meet strict limits for pollutants and chemical emissions, including VOCs and other substances that can affect indoor air quality, with testing conducted against criteria that go beyond basic legal requirements.
- Covers specific finished products or components, depending on the certification: mattresses, latex foam, mattress cores, bedding, and other interior products can be tested. The certification can be component-specific, so it does not necessarily certify every material in an entire mattress.
- For shoppers: “eco-INSTITUT” is a strong low-emissions and indoor-air-quality credential, particularly useful for people concerned about off-gassing and harmful substances. It does not mean the product is organic; certifications such as GOTS and GOLS address organic materials.
“Non‑toxic” / clean‑ingredient certifications
These standards go beyond emissions and dig into the actual ingredient list, screening for known and suspected toxins, endocrine disruptors, and other problematic chemicals.
MADE SAFE®

- Requires high transparency about ingredients and manufacturing practices.
- For shoppers: this resonates with health‑conscious buyers familiar with EWG’s work on cosmetics and household products.
UL Formaldehyde Free
- Confirms that the mattress has been tested and verified to contain no formaldehyde, a chemical that can contribute to indoor air pollution and irritation.
- For shoppers: useful for customers worried about “chemical smells” and respiratory issues.
